Is it better to measure inch loss, weight loss or body fat loss?

There are so many ways to measure your success that it can become overwhelming and sometimes confusing to decide which way you want to measure your success.

Some prefer the body fat loss, some the weight loss and some the inch loss. Others may prefer just measuring their success by the way their clothes fit. Still others by the way they feel over all.

That is my preference. I have worked with people who see dramatic changes in the way they look and feel, yet the tape measure only shows a small loss and the scale may even show a smaller loss.

One reason for this is that yes, muscle does weigh more than fat but also as our bodies shrink we are usually only measuring in a few areas, not each and every area. You may be feeling like you are shrinking, look like you are shrinking and yet if you are only measuring 5 or 6 areas you will miss the fact that you have most likely lost several more inches from the unmeasured places.

I suppose this is why my favorite way to measure your success is how your clothes fit and how you feel over all.

It is a good idea to write down all of the changes you see. Sleeping better? Write it down. More energy? write it down. Feeling happier, healthier, stronger? Write it down. Is your skin feeling tighter? Write it down. Skin looking brighter and more firm? Write it down.

These are all measurable changes and worth noting. This will also help to keep you more motivated.

Pay attention to all of your triumphs and give yourself a big pat on the back for all of your effort. In a very short time you will be able to see all of the changes that have taken place because you cared enough about yourself to stay with something that can change your health for the rest of your life.

Now go do some Life Lift breaths and give yourself all the credit you deserve.

The Best Diet for You

My sweet husband sent this to me with this note: This is hands down-THE best analysis of the diets programs- From Atkins to South Beach and Dr. Phil's. I'd put it into your newsletter verbatim just cite the source.

I agree and because you know I believe in good healthy eating habits for a lifetime rather than deprivation diets that make you feel like you are going to die of hunger..I felt this information was good enough to pass on you.

Many of you are using Life Lift without the use of any type of diet program. I prefer a common sense, healthy lifestyle eating plan to the deprivation diets that have created havoc for so many.

I know that some of you have tried some of the eating plans listed below. I am hoping this will be helpful for you in picking your recipes for healthy eating for the rest of your lives.

Remember that your heart health is the most important thing you can think of when deciding how you want to eat to improve your health. What good will it do you if you lose weight if you have a heart attack and die? I hope you realize the importance of what I have just said.

Many of you know that I suffered from heart problems as a child. One reason I am so in love with Life Lift is the benefits I have realized in regards to my heart strength, and the over all improvement in my health. My immune system is so much improved since I was a child and I attribute this to Life Lift and my lifestyle over all.

From this whole article I hope you note this paragraph. "For long-term health,in addition to an eating plan that you can realistically follow on a daily basis, there are several factors that will to help keep your weight within your ideal range and keep all your body systems healthy. These factors include regular exercise, relaxation techniques."

This explains in part of why Life Lift is such a good choice for you for your exercise program to keep your body healthy and slim for the rest of your life. With Life Lift you get the benefits of exercise along with the relaxation, all at one time. It does not get any better than that.

I am presenting this to you extracted from the author.

"The Best Diet for you"
by Krisha McCoy, MS and Karen Schroeder, MS, RD

What is the best diet to help you lose weight and improve heart health in the short-term?
a) a low-carbohydrate (carb), high-protein diet
b) a moderate-carb, high-protein diet
c) a moderate-fat diet

If you chose a, b, or c, you're right -- sort of. The best answer isn't there, it's: "d. The reduced-calorie diet that you'll stick with." Why? According to a study presented at the November 12, 2003 American Heart Association Scientific Session that compared four different diets, ranging from low-fat to high-protein, all the diets resulted in the same amount of weight loss after one year. The question above says "short-term" This study also found that heart risk scores -- which are based on findings from the Framingham Heart study include total and LDL cholesterol levels -- improved with all the diets. For long-term health, in addition to an eating plan that you can realistically follow on a daily basis, there are several factors that will help keep your weight within your ideal range and keep all your body systems healthy. These factors include regular exercise, relaxation techniques, and not drinking to excess or smoking.

The truth is, most diet plans are built on the premise that reducing calorie intake leads to weight loss. That means that the diet that's right for you is the one that limits the foods you are most likely to overeat, but still allows you to eat foods you enjoy. To help you choose the eating plan that's right for you, here is a brief explanation of four of today's most popular diet plans.

The Atkins' Nutritional Approach(TM)
Atkins' Nutritional Approach(TM) stresses dramatically reducing your intake of carbohydrates and replacing them with foods rich in protein and fat. The theory goes like this: "Your body burns carbohydrates and fat for energy. With Atkins' unique approach, you limit carbs so your body burns fat."

What's Involved
The Atkins' diet has four phases. During the induction phase, you eat no more than 20 grams (gms) of carbohydrates per day, mostly from salad greens and other acceptable vegetables. This means no bread, pasta, rice, fruit, milk, yogurt, cereal, juice, cookies, sweets, or potatoes, among other foods. You can eat as much as you like from foods that are pure protein and fat, such as meats, eggs, oils, and butter. The induction phase lasts at least two weeks, and usually results in rapid weight loss.
During the next three phases (ongoing weight loss, pre-maintenance, and lifetime maintenance), you will slowly reintroduce carbs until your weight loss slows and, when you reach your goal, stops. Then, you'll monitor your weight, and if you gain, you take away carbs again until you lose the weight again. This means that your calorie intake (and your weight) is moderated by adjusting your carbohydrate intake. Protein and fat are not restricted. You are also advised to take a multivitamin and drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water each day.

The Research
A study in the May 22, 2003 issue of the "New England Journal of Medicine," reported that people following the Atkins' diet lost more weight than a control group after three and six months, but that both groups had lost approximately the same amount of weight after one year. This is the typical pattern in studies including the Atkins' diet -- quick weight loss, followed by some regain.

The Concerns
The Atkins' diet is rich in high-protein and high-fat foods, such as bacon, steak, and cheese. While this eating pattern hasn't been shown to be harmful when followed for one year, many nutrition experts worry that the high levels of saturated and trans fats as well as cholesterol in these foods will increase your risk for heart attack if you follow the diet for an extended period of time. There is also concern that the high levels of protein can overload and damage the kidneys, which is especially dangerous for people with diabetes or kidney disease.

Dr. Phil's Ultimate Weight Solution: The 7 Keys To Weight Loss Freedom
Dr. Phil's focus is broader than most fad diets. He begins with the contention that "If you are overweight, you are out of control." Then, drawing on his specialty in psychology, he outlines the seven keys to taking control of your thought process, environment, eating, exercise habits, and other aspects of your life that contribute to your being overweight. This program seems to target people who have a lot of weight to lose, but most people will benefit from the practical advice.

What's Involved
Dr. Phil's nutrition advice is not new, just packaged in a new way. His recommendations are similar to those in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the Food Guide Pyramid -- balance across the food groups, with an emphasis on fruits and vegetables, whole-grain carbohydrates, lean protein sources, and low-fat dairy products. He also provides tips on portion control and reinforces the idea that no food is inherently good or bad, but that some should be eaten more often than others. Dr. Phil stresses rebuilding self-esteem, setting realistic goals, making changes that will last a lifetime, and allowing yourself some flexibility with those goals and changes.

The Research
Dr. Phil refers to his own clinical practice and research as well as nutrition research in general, but does not discuss specific studies. His "7 keys" plan has not been tested in randomized studies. However, he has begun a weight loss challenge consisting of 13 people who are following his program.

The Concerns
Dr. Phil's recipe for success requires that people take responsibility for their weight, dredge up the issues contributing to their being overweight, and overcome them. Some people may be empowered by these strategies, but others may be turned off by these "get real" methods.

Weight Watchers FlexPoints Plan
Like Dr. Phil's program, the Weight Watchers FlexPoints Plan stresses better food choices and portion control for long-term weight loss. The claim is: "With FlexPoints, you can eat the foods you love and still achieve your weight-loss goals."

What's Involved
On the FlexPoints Plan, you are allotted a daily POINTS(R) range based on your body weight. Every food has a POINTS(R) value (for example, a scoop of ice cream has about four POINTS(R) and an apple has about one POINT(R)). You can eat whatever foods you want, as long as you stay within your daily POINTS(R) range. POINTS(R) values are based on the amount of calories, fat, and fiber in a food. The FlexPoints Plan also emphasizes exercise. When you exercise, you earn Activity POINTS(R), which can be transferred into Food POINTS(R). Weight Watchers recommends an average loss of two pounds a week for safe and sustained weight loss.

The Research
A study in the April 9, 2003 issue of the "Journal of the American Medical Association" found that people following the Weight Watchers program lost significantly more than those on a self-help weight-loss program. At the end of one year, the people on the Weight Watchers program lost an average of 9.5 pounds, while the people in the self-help program lost an average of 2.9 pounds. After two years, the Weight Watchers group lost an average of 6.4 pounds and the self-help group lost an average of 0.4 pounds. Again, losing weight, followed by some weight gain, is typical. However, a net weight loss after two years -- no matter how much -- is desirable.

The Concerns
Overall, the Weight Watchers FlexPoints Plan is a healthful diet. In addition to cutting the amount of calories you consume and encouraging you to exercise, the diet encourages taking a daily multivitamin, drinking lots of water, and eating plenty of fruits, vegetables, and dairy products. But like any diet, the major concern with Weight Watchers is that people won't stick with it. It takes effort to calculate the POINTS(R) value of every food you eat, and the traditional version of the FlexPoints Plan requires attendance at a weekly meeting.

The South Beach Diet
The South Beach Diet, developed by cardiologist Arthur Agatston, MD, attempts to find a happy medium between low-carb and low-fat diets. It "teaches you to rely on the right carbs and the right fats -- the good ones -- and enables you to live quite happily without the bad carbs and bad fats."

What's Involved
The South Beach Diet has three phases. During the two weeks of Phase 1, breads, rice, potatoes, pasta, baked goods, and even fruit are restricted. You can eat enough meat, chicken, turkey, fish, vegetables, eggs, cheese, nuts, and salads with olive oil dressing to make you feel full.

Phase 2, which you will stay on until you reach your weight-loss goal, is less restrictive. You can add carbs back into your diet, but in moderation. The focus is on whole-grain carbs, but you can now splurge on refined carbs every once in a while. After you have reached your weight-loss goal, you will enter into Phase 3, "the stage that lasts the rest of your life." In this phase, you are encouraged to focus on monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats instead of saturated and trans fats, and whole-grain carbs instead of refined ones.

Although exercise isn't a main focus of this diet, Dr. Agatston recommends you take a brisk, 20-minute walk each day. Dr. Agatston claims that you will lose 8-13 pounds in Phase 1, and 1-2 pounds per week in Phase 2.

The Research
The South Beach Diet relies on Dr. Agatston's own research, which he presented at a meeting of the American College of Cardiology. He found that people on the South Beach Diet lost significantly more weight than a control group. But since the study was small and, more importantly, since Dr. Agatston himself conducted the study, more research is needed to determine whether the South Beach Diet is effective.

The Concerns
While the strengths of this diet are that it focuses on healthful fats and whole grains, Phase 1 is extremely restrictive and may cause many enthusiastic dieters to give up. Also, the promise that you will lose 8-13 pounds during the first two weeks is questionable. Even if it were true, most health professionals recommend no more than a couple of pounds a week for safe, long-term weight loss.

Medicinal Benefits of Whole Foods
During the first years of civilization people relied on herbs and whole foods for medicine as well as nourishment.

It would be good for us not to forget how important and beneficial natural whole foods and herbs can be.

It is important that we remember the well-documented, non-toxic and inexpensive healing properties of whole foods.

In this and future newsletters I will highlight some of the health benefits from whole, natural foods as well as some of the healthy herbs we have available to us.

The benefits of an apple in your daily eating plan. An apple a day can lower cholesterol and your risk for cancer. The apple has mild antibacterial, anti-viral, anti-inflammatory and estrogenic activity. Apples are high in fiber. Apples can help avoid constipation and suppress your appetite. Apples are very filling too. Apples are high in a unique fiber called pectin which stays in your system longer and helps keep hunger away.

I just read an article in one of my favorite magazines Woman's World that said starting your day with an apple can make a big difference in your weight loss success. The article said that if we don't get enough calories early in the day it can cause our blood sugar to drop which can put us in a craving zone late in the day. We should add an apple to our breakfast every day. I have been eating at least one apple every day for many years so this makes complete sense to me. I love apples.

It appears that old saying, " an apple a day keeps the doctor away", may also apply to keeping your weight under control too

Cashew nuts

Once again I will remind you that it has been proved that nuts in general provide more than twice the energy furnished by meat and fish. They are also richer in proteins.

The Harvard heart letter published by Harvard Medical School, noted various health benefits of nuts.

Nuts have a unique nutrient composition that could favorably affect heart disease risk factors and interfere with the development of plaque in the arteries. The fats in the nuts can lower cholesterol and improve the ratio between ldl and hdl Cholesterol. By lowering your cholesterol you will lower your risk of having heart disease.

Nuts are easy for your body to digest, high in enzymes so they are good to eat any time of the day.

This newsletter our pick for nuts is the delicious cashew nut.

Cashews are rich in essential amino acids also. The fat profile of cashew nuts would be in the ratio Saturated:Monosaturated:Polysaturated 1:2:1; which is most ideal for human consumption.

Cashews are a good source of minerals like sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorous. It has also been noted that cashews provide more of the essential trace elements like iron, copper and zinc than all other nuts. These minerals in their organic form protect our physical health and nervous system.

Cashews are excellent dietary supplements in the human diet especially in lactating women, pregnancy, children and patients who are recovering from illness. Protein is present in abundance and that too of a good quality. Cashews provide a rich blend of minerals and water soluble vitamins. The fat content of cashew makes it an energy rich food and the fatty acid profile makes it ideal for human consumption.

So much so cashews find itself at the bottom of the Mediterranean diet pyramid, along with fruits, vegetables, beans, bread, pasta etc which are recommended for daily intake. Cashews are useful in the treatment of various diseases like scurvy, anemia, nervous weakness etc due to the high vitamin .B and iron content.

Testimonials of the month, something to inspire you - Are you here??? If not, you can be soon.

Hi Rashelle,
I just had to drop you a note and let you know how much my son is enjoying the Oxygen Zoo video. We received it yesterday (thank you for the quick shipping and extra goodie in the box!). He couldn't wait to tell his dad how much fun he had. He's ready to do the video again this afternoon. Thank you for a truly wonderful product - I could not believe how quickly he picked up on the breathing technique, but it's a testimony to the wonderful instruction you give on the tape.
God bless!
Stacie Davis

I'm writing is because my son asked me to. He's 11 and has had a problem with his weight for the last 2 years or so. It never really bothered him before, but he gained some weight over the holidays and his brother told him he looked liked Samwise from the the Lord of the Rings. (I think he thought it meant he looked fat, though to be honest, they just have the same face.) I guess it bothered him, so he's made a resolution to reduce his sweet intake and has started to want to work out with me.
I bought him the Oxygen Zoo video a couple of years ago, but he didn't stick with it, but now he wants to use it. He asked me to write you and let you know that after 2 of the Oxygen Zoo workouts he lost 2 pounds and a whole inch off his belly. He's very, very proud and very smug about it, and he asked me to tell you about it.
Thanks a bunch!
Fawn
